Two keyboards, one desktop, one query string

At the office, a Mac. At home, a Windows box with an AZERTY keyboard. Same container, same desktop, same open files. The only thing that differs is the URL.

On the Mac you bookmark ?swap_keys=true&keyboard_layout=us, so Cmd becomes Ctrl and copy-paste lands where your hands expect. At home the bookmark says ?keyboard_layout=fr. On the tablet, ?keyboard=true puts a virtual keyboard on screen and pinch handles zoom.

The desktop never changes. Firefox has the same tabs, the terminal the same history, GIMP the same canvas. Each device adapts the view to its own hardware with a parameter; nothing adapts the machine.

Remote desktop software makes you configure a client per device. Here the client is a browser and the configuration is a bookmark.

The computer is the same everywhere. The keyboard is a query string.
