Containers

Fourteen droplets, one box

You inherit the infrastructure inventory: fourteen $6 droplets, each running one thing. A status page. A Matrix bridge. A cron that emails a report. A Postgres for a tool two people use. Fourteen public IPs, fourteen apt upgrade sessions, fourteen SSH keys in a spreadsheet, $84 a month for workloads that together use less than one core.

On Hoody they're fourteen containers on a single $29 bare metal box. Each keeps its own filesystem, its own ports, its own URL. The migration is rsync and a crontab. Thirteen of the fourteen are idle at any moment: no CPU, and the host's periodic dedup pass folds whatever blocks they have in common. The box is bored.

The droplets were priced per machine because each was a machine. Here the machine is the unit, and the fourteen things are folders.

Fourteen servers to patch became one server and fourteen directories.
