Containers

A $3-a-month product is a business when the customer costs nothing

You want to charge $3 a month for a small tool: a personal changelog, a bookmark archive, a habit tracker with an API. Every infrastructure calculator says no. At $3, a per-customer database plan or a per-app dyno eats the margin before Stripe takes its cut.

The calculator assumes each customer is a meter. On Hoody each customer is a container on a $29 bare metal box. Most of them are idle most of the day; idle containers share disk blocks copy-on-write and burn no CPU. A thousand $3 customers is $3,000 a month against one server's rent, and the thousand-and-first costs nothing until the box fills.

The price floor for a product used to be set by the infrastructure underneath it; now it's set by what people will pay.
